Working with The Lowry: Andrew Stokes – Chief Executive, Marketing Manchester

English Tourism Week, led by the national tourist board, VisitEngland, is upon us. Running from the 29 March – 6 April, the week-long celebration of events showcases the quality and vibrancy of visitor experiences and the value that tourism brings to our nation, shining a light on the importance of tourism in England.

With the industry as whole worth £106 billion to the UK economy and supporting 2.5 million jobs, it’s certainly something worth celebrating.

Here at Marketing Manchester we are charged with promoting our City both nationally and internationally and for us, tourism is vitally important, generating £6.6bn a year for the Greater Manchester economy.

We don’t do this alone and we couldn’t; we have the backing of the City’s businesses, institutions, tourism attractions, hotels drinking holes, eateries and active stakeholders to help us achieve great things.

The Lowry, with more than 800,000 visitors a year, is considered a key part of Manchester’s tourism industry. Since opening in 2000 it has been a source of great theatre for the region and its long standing partnership with the National Theatre has ensured the latest productions make their way to North West audiences.

This successful relationship has brought to Salford productions such as One Man Two Guvnors starring James Corden, the original cast of The History Boys, as well as critically acclaimed productions such as the award-winning The Seafarer and Katie Mitchell’s stunning production of Waves. These are incredible tourism assets to have when promoting your city around the UK and further afield.

One of the biggest shows at The Lowry in recent years is War Horse. Its record breaking run from 20 November (2013) to 18 January (2014) has had its worth valued at £8.9M GVA to the Greater Manchester economy. The highly acclaimed National Theatre production returns for a second, nine-week residency from 23 July to 20 September 2014, and having already sold more than 114,500 tickets for the 70 performances during its first 56-day residency – we’re very excited for the second run and the positive impact it will have on the rest of the city.
