This week Idle Motion present Shooting With Light at The Lowry Studio (Wed 22 – Fri 24 April) after kicking off their tour at New Diorama Theatre, London, in March. In this guest blog they tell us more about their time as one of The Lowry’s Associate Artists.
We have been Associate Artists at The Lowry since January 2014 and in that time they have provided endless support and encouragement, from advising us on Arts Council Funding applications to helping us develop artistically through masterclasses with other companies. It is hard to believe that almost a year ago we came to The Lowry to work with their production team for a week and we first mentioned our tentative plans for a new show all about photography. They immediately got on board and now we are bringing the final product ‘Shooting with Light’ to The Studio 22nd – 24th April.
The show tells the story of Gerda Taro, a young German refugee who fled to Paris in 1933 and fell in love with fellow refugee Andre Friedmann who taught her to use a camera. Together they travelled to The Spanish Civil War and pioneered photojournalism as we know it today, he would go on to become iconic war photographer Robert Capa and she would be forgotten.
As soon as we read about this exceptional woman and saw the photographs she risked her life to take we felt compelled to tell her story and it quickly become very clear to us that an awareness of her phenomenal talent and pioneering spirit is long overdue. In fact she may never have been rediscovered at all had a suitcase containing her body of work not been found in the back of a wardrobe in Mexico City in 2007, a suitcase that Robert Capa’s brother Cornell Capa had spent his lifetime searching for. These two storylines – that of Gerda Taro and her lost negatives – is woven together in ‘Shooting with Light’ using innovative staging, multimedia and physicality and after a critically acclaimed three week run in London we can’t wait to bring it The Lowry – our theatre home from home.
We very much hope to see you there,
